VAT registration is not decided by the trade licence alone. A business needs to analyse the value and nature of its supplies and imports, the period being measured, and whether a forward-looking test applies before it prepares an EmaraTax application.
Start with the threshold calculation
The Federal Tax Authority states that the mandatory registration threshold is AED 375,000. A business may apply voluntarily where taxable supplies and imports, or qualifying taxable expenses, exceed AED 187,500. Those figures are only the start of the analysis because the calculation depends on the supplies included and the period reviewed.
The business should retain a transaction-level schedule showing how the total was reached. Sales reports, contracts, invoices and import data should agree with the accounting ledger and with the activity described in the application.
- Review the previous 12 months
- Consider expected taxable supplies and imports in the next 30 days
- Separate taxable, zero-rated and exempt activity
- Identify non-resident or special fact patterns early
Prepare evidence before opening the application
Registration applications commonly require licence and incorporation records, ownership and authorised-signatory identification, banking information and evidence of business activity. Names, addresses and legal details should be consistent across those documents and the EmaraTax profile.
A document gap is easier to resolve before submission than during an FTA information request. Create one evidence index and record the source of every number used in the threshold calculation.
Treat registration as the start of the control process
After registration, invoice configuration, tax coding, return responsibilities and record retention need to be ready for the first tax period. The registration date and reporting periods should be communicated to the bookkeeping and finance teams.
This article is general information. The treatment can change with the entity, activity, place of supply and transaction facts, so the official FTA guidance and the business’s evidence should be reviewed together.
