A Corporate Tax return should be the output of a controlled close. The process starts with final accounting records, identifies tax adjustments and elections, resolves evidence gaps, and documents who prepared and reviewed each material position.

Confirm the taxable person and period

The return file should begin with the legal entity, Corporate Tax registration number, tax period, licences and branch information. Group structures and changes during the period need to be visible before figures are mapped from the trial balance.

Registration data should agree with constitutional documents and the financial statements. Differences in legal name, ownership, branch data or period dates should be investigated rather than carried into the filing process.

Reconcile accounting profit to supported taxable income

The final trial balance and financial statements are the starting point. The tax computation then records adjustments, elections, reliefs and other positions with links to schedules and source documents. Related-party and connected-person data should be prepared as part of the close instead of added at the end.

A review log should distinguish missing information, judgemental positions and mechanical differences. This makes the final management approval more useful and creates a clearer record if the FTA later asks for support.

  • Lock the final trial balance used for the return
  • Create an adjustment register with evidence references
  • Reconcile fixed assets, provisions and material expenses
  • Document elections, reliefs and related-party information

Keep the filing evidence after submission

The filed return, computation, supporting schedules and approval evidence should be retained together. Submission is not the end of the process: payment, record retention and the next compliance period still need ownership and dates.

Technical conclusions should be checked against the current Corporate Tax Law, implementing decisions and FTA guidance. This article explains process design and does not replace advice on a specific tax position.
